Advocates in the Pilbara and Goldfields have joined calls for on-country youth facilities to replace the state's under-fire Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Calls to address the ongoing crisis at the facility — Western Australia's only youth detention centre — have been building for months, escalating after Four Corners exposed violent treatment being meted out to young detainees.

While the state government has pledged to build an alternate facility in the Kimberley, similar proposals for other regions are already being called for.

Port Hedland-based Kariyarra elder Pat Mason acknowledged children who committed crimes needed to be removed from the community.
