A new COVID test can return a result within 30 minutes with 98 per cent accuracy even if the person is asymptomatic, according to the Australian scientists that developed it.

Perth researchers say the highly sensitive test, which is about to be trialled on FIFO workers at Perth airport, could also help to reduce the impact of future pandemic events or stronger COVID variants.

Data on the new screening system, published last week in Nature journal's Scientific Reports, suggests it can run 4,000 tests per hour.

Professor Sulev Koks, the senior author and head of genetic epidemiology research at Western Australia's Perron Institute and Murdoch University, said the method was significantly faster than the PCR system and more accurate than a rapid antigen test.
