The quarantine standoff between Hong Kong and Australia has finally been resolved.
The resolution of the issue means Hong Kong stars are now able to head to Australia to compete in the country’s best races on the same quarantine footing as other international runners.
Horse movement between the two jurisdictions had been governed by interim rules since March but horses from Hong Kong still had to complete 180 days in a third country before arriving in Australia.
Travel protocols relating to the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s facility at Conghua, in mainland China, was the major sticking point in negotiations but the HKJC announced an agreement on Monday.
HKJC racing director Andrew Harding said Australian biosecurity officials recently toured the Conghua centre.
