Shorten's 'courageous' emissions target draws fire in energy-intense WA

When opposition leader Bill Shorten took the stage on Sunday to launch Labor's election campaign, the true believers roared when he promised "courage and action" on climate change instead of "cowardice and chaos".

Although he was playing a sure thing to a home crowd, Mr Shorten's 45 per cent carbon emissions reduction policy has been well received, even though some journalists have been frustrated by the lack of detail about its impact on the economy.

But Mr Shorten is also promising 50 percent of the nation's electricity will come from renewable energy sources by 2030 and said the south west will become a "renewable energy zone".

The means projects in the the region could access "potential support from Labor’s $5 billion Energy Security and Modernisation fund".

No matter which way these massive numbers are dissected, they will mean revolutionary change for WA's economy would be likely under a Shorten Labor Government.

Labor's federal campaign and Canning candidate Mellisa Teede did not respond to requests for comment.
