Adults and children in Western Australia have been put on alert for a measles outbreak connected to two popular Perth locations.

The Western Australian Government’s Department of Health today issued an urgent alert after confirming a case of the illness in a person who visited the Perth Zoo and the IKEA store at Innaloo.

The alert said both children and adults who visited the zoo on New Year’s Day or the IKEA store about lunchtime on January 2 could have been affected and at risk up until January 20.

SA Health’s communicable disease control branch director, Dr Louise Flood, said in a statement that the woman had household contact with another confirmed case and is now recovering.

“The household contacts of the recent case who are susceptible to measles have been in isolation, so there is no risk of infection to the public,” Dr Flood said.

Symptoms that typically develop in affected people 10 days after being exposed to the virus include a fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes, followed by a red and blotchy rash.
