Sharks: ‘Shark 28’ sets new long-distance world record

IT’S the shark that’s gone “walkabout”, setting a new long-distance world record.

And the record-breaking great white — whose epic swim from Queensland to Esperance sparked a rethink of shark migration theories — has returned to WA and was last recorded off Margaret River.

The 3m sub-adult male white shark, which was satellite tagged off Ballina in northern NSW in 2016 by the NSW Department of Primary Industries, is officially named “Shark 28”.

But among research scientists it is known as the shark that has gone “walkabout”, covering the entire southern coast of Australia and racking up a staggering 28,000km since it was tagged just over two years ago.
